My dad is a pretty conservative guy; business first, sports or philanthropy second, and perhaps family fourth. That's not a criticism, just more a reflection of his comfort levels. But as he entered his 70's, his health, and specifically his ability to grip, had become a challenge and started to really interfere with golf, his favourite pastime. With Valentine's Day coming up, I thought I'd ask, "What does joy mean to you?"

To help you get started, here's how two people you might know answered (and thank you to Cheryl and Tommy for taking some time to share your thoughts!):

“To me, joy is a state of mind, that is completely controlled internally. I feel joy when I wake up, as I realize how blessed I am to be healthy and strong. I feel joy around my family, especially when my daughters run and jump into my arms, yelling ‘daddy’. I feel joy knowing that I always follow my dreams, and achieve success despite setbacks. And I feel joy knowing that I’m giving back and that I do make a difference in improving people’s outlook and confidence. My wish is that you too feel joy, not just today, but every day!”

Did you notice that holiday and Christmas decorations came early this year? It's not all that surprising, given that opportunities for joy have become even more important throughout this pandemic. My wife and I usually have enough restraint not to untangle the outdoor lights until after US Thanksgiving. Yet there we were, on the afternoon of Remembrance Day (US Veterans Day), joining a trend that hit the news before November was done - people getting their Christmas lights up early.
